Position Information

SEARCH has immediate openings for full-time Archaeological Technicians to join our team and work on multiple archaeological surveys and excavation projects across the Southeastern and Western regions of the United States.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Conduct archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, assessment and excavation for Phase 1, 2 and 3 studies in accordance with the Project Work Plan;
  • Record accurate field notes, marked field maps, and drawings that support testing coverage and site evaluation;
  • Collect artifacts and samples in accordance with the Project Work Plan and keep accurate FS log;
  • Photo-document artifacts, features, and sites; keep accurate photo log;
  • QAQC field data (notes and electronic) on a daily basis to ensure data submitted to office/Principal Investigator is accurate and complete;
  • Report any issues to the Project Archaeologist or Principal Investigator as necessary;
  • Use a variety of methods to locate suitable excavation sites, including geophysical surveys and aerial photography;
  • Use your professional judgment, in consultation with the Project Archaeologist or Principal Investigator, to identify and target locations of enhanced site probability based on landform and other environmental features;
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and implement safe practices;
  • Use electronic and traditional navigational equipment (GPS, iPad/ArcCollector/Survey 123, compass) to orient yourself and perform fieldwork; and
  • Other duties, as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field;
  • Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field preferred;
  • At least six (6) months of archaeological field experience required;
  • Secretary of the Interior (SOI) qualified is strongly preferred;
  • Ability to meet deadlines;
  • Detail oriented, organized, and able to work well on simultaneous tasks;
  • Competency at taking detailed project notes;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Competency at collecting field data using GPS or other electronic devices;
  • Ability to navigate using US Geological Survey (USGS) maps and aerial photography;
  • Ability to travel for weeks at a time; and
  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
